If Gavrilo Princip hadn’t been a coffee drinker, would World War I have happened?

The Serbian firebrand’s plot to kill Austria’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand was hatched in a Belgrade coffeehouse in April 1914. Two months later, when Ferdinand visited the Bosnia-Herzegovina city of Sarajevo, Princip and his coconspirators were ready. A comrade threw a bomb at Ferdinand’s car, but the archduke escaped unharmed. Princip, hearing the bomb blast and thinking the archduke dead, neglected to shoot at the motorcade as it passed. When he realized that the archduke was still alive and that he had missed his opportunity, Princip retired to a coffeehouse to drown his sorrows. Meanwhile, the archduke made a speech and returned to his car, which took a wrong turn and stopped to turn around—in front of the very coffeehouse where Princip was drinking. Princip seized this improbable second chance and fatally shot Ferdinand, setting off a war that would kill ten million people.
